Giftedness Assessment for Children in Alberta — Understanding Your Child’s Full Potential

Gifted children often learn, think, and experience the world differently from their peers. They may learn new concepts quickly, ask complex questions, become deeply absorbed in particular interests, or seem far ahead academically in some areas.

But giftedness doesn’t always look like academic success.

Some gifted children become bored or disengaged at school. Others struggle with perfectionism, emotional regulation, social relationships, or anxiety. Some may have another condition—such as ADHD or a learning disability—that makes their giftedness more difficult to recognize.

At Family Life Psychology & Wellness, we provide comprehensive giftedness assessments for children and youth throughout Alberta, including Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Fort McMurray, and surrounding communities.

Our goal is to understand the whole child: their intellectual strengths, learning profile, areas of challenge, and the supports they need to thrive.

What Is a Giftedness Assessment?

A giftedness assessment is a comprehensive psychological evaluation that looks at a child’s intellectual abilities, cognitive strengths, learning profile, and academic functioning.

Rather than relying on classroom performance or a single test score, a professional assessment provides a more complete picture of how your child thinks and learns.

Giftedness can involve exceptional abilities in areas such as:

A giftedness assessment can help families and educators understand a child’s strengths and determine whether additional academic enrichment, accommodations, or other supports may be appropriate.

Signs Your Child May Be Gifted

Giftedness can look different from child to child. Some children demonstrate advanced academic abilities, while others show exceptional reasoning, creativity, curiosity, or problem-solving skills.

You may notice that your child:

These characteristics don’t automatically mean a child is gifted. A comprehensive assessment helps determine whether their cognitive profile reflects giftedness and what that means for their education and development.

What Our Giftedness Assessment Includes

Every assessment is tailored to the individual child, but a comprehensive giftedness assessment typically examines several areas of cognitive functioning.

Intellectual and cognitive abilities

Standardized cognitive testing provides information about how your child reasons, understands information, solves problems, and processes new concepts.

Depending on the assessment, areas may include:

Looking at these areas individually helps identify your child’s particular cognitive strengths rather than treating intelligence as a single number.

Understanding your child’s learning profile

Gifted children don’t necessarily perform equally well in every area.

A child may demonstrate exceptional verbal reasoning while having more average processing speed, for example. Another child may have advanced mathematical reasoning while struggling with written expression.

Understanding these patterns is important because a child’s overall profile can influence how they experience school and everyday life.

Academic achievement

When appropriate, academic achievement may also be evaluated to understand how your child’s cognitive abilities compare with their current academic performance.

This can help identify situations where a child is:

Looking at both cognitive and academic functioning provides a more complete picture.

What Does “Twice Exceptional” (2E) Mean?

Not every gifted child fits the traditional image of a high-achieving student.

Some children are twice exceptional, commonly called 2E. This means they have gifted or exceptionally high cognitive abilities while also experiencing a disability or other condition that affects learning or functioning.

For example, a child may be:

These children can be particularly difficult to identify.

Their strengths may compensate for their challenges, allowing difficulties to go unnoticed. Alternatively, their challenges may be so significant that their giftedness is overlooked.

For example, a gifted child with ADHD may understand advanced concepts but struggle to complete assignments. A gifted child with dyslexia may have exceptional verbal reasoning but experience significant difficulty with reading.

A comprehensive assessment helps identify both sides of the profile so that your child receives support for their areas of difficulty while also being appropriately challenged in their areas of strength.

How a Giftedness Assessment Can Help at School

Identifying giftedness is not simply about putting a label on a child. It can help parents and educators understand how to create an environment where the child remains engaged and appropriately challenged.

Assessment findings may help inform:

For twice-exceptional students, the assessment can be particularly valuable because it helps schools understand both the child’s exceptional abilities and the barriers affecting their learning.

When Giftedness Comes With Emotional Challenges

Gifted children can experience emotional challenges just like any other child—and sometimes their advanced cognitive abilities can make those challenges more complicated.

Some gifted children experience:

Counselling can sometimes be helpful alongside assessment, particularly when emotional regulation, anxiety, or perfectionism is affecting your child’s wellbeing.

Our Emotional Regulation and Child Counselling services can provide additional support when appropriate.

What Your Giftedness Assessment Report Includes

Following the assessment, you’ll receive a comprehensive written report explaining your child’s results in clear, accessible language.

Your report may include:

You’ll also meet with your psychologist for a feedback session where we review the results, answer your questions, and discuss practical next steps.

Our goal is for you to leave with a clearer understanding of how your child thinks, learns, and experiences the world.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between giftedness testing and a psychoeducational assessment?

Giftedness testing focuses primarily on understanding intellectual and cognitive abilities and identifying exceptional strengths. A psychoeducational assessment is broader and typically examines cognitive functioning, academic achievement, processing skills, and other factors affecting learning. If your child has both advanced abilities and significant learning concerns, a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment may provide the most complete picture.

Q: What age can a child be assessed for giftedness?

Giftedness can be assessed during childhood and adolescence. The appropriate timing depends on your child’s age, developmental stage, concerns, and the reason for seeking assessment. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready for testing, our team can discuss your concerns and help determine the most appropriate next step.

Q: Can a gifted child also have ADHD?

Yes. Giftedness and ADHD can absolutely occur together. A child who is gifted and has ADHD may demonstrate exceptional reasoning and learning abilities while simultaneously struggling with attention, organization, impulsivity, or completing tasks. This is one example of a twice-exceptional (2E) profile.

Q: Can a gifted child also have a learning disability?

Yes. Giftedness can coexist with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia. In these cases, a child’s intellectual strengths may mask their learning difficulties, or their learning difficulties may make their giftedness less obvious. A comprehensive assessment can help identify both strengths and areas requiring support.

Q: Does being gifted mean my child will automatically do well in school?

Not necessarily. Gifted children can struggle academically for many different reasons. They may become bored, lack appropriate challenge, experience perfectionism, or have ADHD, a learning disability, anxiety, or another concern affecting their performance. Looking at the whole learning profile is important when determining why a child may not be performing at the level expected from their abilities.

Q: Will a giftedness assessment help my child get more challenging schoolwork?

The assessment can provide useful information to help parents and educators understand your child’s cognitive strengths and consider appropriate educational strategies. Recommendations may include enrichment, greater academic challenge, curriculum adaptations, or other supports depending on the child’s individual profile.
