Autism Assessment in Alberta — Understanding Your Child More Fully

Every child experiences the world differently. If you’ve noticed that your child communicates, learns, plays, or responds to the world in ways that seem different from their peers, you may be wondering whether autism spectrum disorder (ASD) could be part of the picture.

At Family Life Psychology & Wellness, we provide comprehensive autism assessments for children, teens, and adults across Alberta, including Spruce Grove, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, and surrounding communities. Our registered psychologists take a thoughtful, evidence-based, and neurodiversity-affirming approach to assessment—helping families better understand their child while identifying strengths, challenges, and the supports that will help them thrive.

Whether you’re seeking answers for school, government funding, or simply a deeper understanding of your child, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

What Is an Autism Spectrum Assessment?

An autism spectrum assessment is a comprehensive psychological evaluation that determines whether an individual meets the diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It looks beyond behaviours alone to understand how your child communicates, interacts socially, processes information, and experiences the world.

Our goal isn’t simply to answer whether your child is autistic—it’s to develop a complete understanding of who they are and provide practical recommendations that support their growth, wellbeing, and success.

Who is this assessment for?

An autism assessment may be appropriate for children, teens, or adults who experience ongoing differences in communication, social interaction, behaviour, or sensory processing.

Families often seek an assessment when they notice their child:

  • Has difficulty understanding social cues or making friends
  • Prefers routines and becomes distressed by unexpected changes
  • Has intense interests or hobbies
  • Communicates differently than peers
  • Experiences sensory sensitivities to sounds, textures, lights, or food
  • Engages in repetitive movements or behaviours
  • Finds transitions particularly difficult
  • Has been identified by teachers or healthcare providers as needing further evaluation

Some individuals show very subtle signs, while others have more obvious support needs. Autism presents differently in every person, which is why a comprehensive assessment is so important.

What it is — and what it is not

An autism assessment is much more than completing a questionnaire or observing a child for a short period of time.

Our psychologists gather information from multiple sources—including parents, caregivers, teachers, developmental history, standardized assessment tools, and direct observation—to ensure an accurate understanding of your child’s strengths and needs.

The assessment also considers other conditions that may present with similar characteristics, such as ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities, language disorders, trauma, or sensory differences.

This careful process helps ensure recommendations are personalized, meaningful, and evidence-based.

Why Families Seek an Autism Assessment

Families pursue autism assessments for many different reasons.

Some parents have noticed developmental differences for years and want answers. Others receive recommendations from teachers, physicians, speech-language pathologists, or occupational therapists after concerns arise at school or in everyday life.

An assessment can help:

  • Better understand your child’s unique strengths and challenges
  • Clarify whether autism spectrum disorder is present
  • Differentiate autism from ADHD, anxiety, or other developmental conditions
  • Access educational accommodations and school supports
  • Support applications for government funding and services
  • Guide therapy recommendations and treatment planning
  • Help families better understand how to support their child at home

For many families, receiving a clear understanding of their child’s needs brings relief, confidence, and direction for the future.

What Our Autism Assessment Includes

Every autism assessment is individualized, but our comprehensive evaluations typically include several components that work together to create a complete clinical picture.

Parent and caregiver interviews

Parents and caregivers know their child better than anyone else.

We begin by gathering a detailed developmental history, discussing early milestones, communication, behaviour, relationships, sensory experiences, medical history, educational concerns, and current functioning.

Your insights are an essential part of the assessment process.

Standardized diagnostic tools (ADOS-2 & ADI-R)

When clinically appropriate, our psychologists use internationally recognized diagnostic tools such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R).

These standardized assessments help ensure diagnostic decisions are based on current best practices and internationally accepted criteria.

Combined with clinical expertise, these tools provide a thorough and reliable evaluation.

Developmental and social-emotional evaluation

Autism affects many areas of development, so we look beyond social communication alone.

Your psychologist may assess:

This comprehensive approach helps identify both strengths and areas where additional support may be beneficial.

Written report and feedback session

Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a detailed written report explaining the findings in clear, understandable language.

If an autism diagnosis is appropriate, your report will include:

  • Diagnostic conclusions
  • Clinical observations
  • Assessment results
  • Individual strengths
  • Areas requiring support
  • Recommendations for school
  • Home strategies
  • Community resources
  • Referrals when appropriate

You’ll also meet with your psychologist during a feedback session to review the results, answer your questions, and discuss next steps.

What Happens After the Assessment

Receiving a diagnosis is often just the beginning of your family’s journey.

Our goal is to provide practical recommendations that help you move forward with confidence.

Sharing results with your child’s school

A comprehensive psychological report can help schools better understand your child’s learning profile and support needs.

Many Alberta schools use psychological assessment reports to guide accommodations, individualized programming, educational planning, and classroom supports that help students succeed.

Accessing government programs and funding

A formal autism assessment may support applications for provincial programs, funding opportunities, and community services available to eligible Alberta families.

Our reports are written with these purposes in mind and provide the detailed clinical information often required during the application process.

What comes next for your family

Every family’s next steps are different.

Following the assessment, recommendations may include counselling, occupational therapy, speech-language services, behavioural supports, social skills programming, emotional regulation strategies, or additional educational planning.

Some families simply gain reassurance and a better understanding of how to support their child in everyday life.

Whatever your journey looks like, we’re here to help you navigate it.

A Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach

At Family Life Psychology & Wellness, we believe autism is a natural part of human diversity—not something that needs to be “fixed.”

Our assessments focus on understanding each person’s unique strengths, differences, and support needs while respecting their individuality and identity.

We strive to create an assessment experience that is welcoming, respectful, and tailored to each client. Our recommendations emphasize building on strengths, reducing barriers, and helping individuals thrive in environments that support them.

Our goal is not to change who someone is—but to provide families with understanding, clarity, and meaningful tools for success.

FAQ

Q: How long does an autism assessment take?

An autism assessment is typically one of the more comprehensive assessments we offer. It often involves multiple appointments spread across several weeks, including clinical interviews with parents, direct assessment with your child, and possibly school observations or teacher rating scales. We will give you a clear timeline at the start.

Q: My child already has an ADHD diagnosis. Can autism and ADHD co-occur?

Yes, absolutely. ADHD and autism spectrum disorder frequently co-occur, and it is important that both are properly assessed. If your child has an existing ADHD diagnosis, we will factor that into the assessment and report.

Q: Will a diagnosis help my child get support at school?

A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, documented by a registered psychologist, can open access to significant supports in Alberta schools, including Educational Assistant time, individualized programming, and specialized learning plans. It may also support applications for provincial programs such as the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program.

Q: My child is older — is it too late to seek an assessment?

It is never too late. We assess children, teens, and adults. Many individuals are not diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood, and a late diagnosis can still be profoundly helpful in understanding oneself and accessing appropriate support.
